Packing-speed calculation guide

How to calculate the pouches per minute your production actually needs.

Start with your real production target, not a machine brochure. Convert the target into pouches per minute, then compare machines at the actual product, fill weight, pouch size and configuration you plan to run.

TimeHour, minute or productive shift

CompareCheck actual machine output
Method 1

From pouches per hour

Required pouches/min = required pouches/hour ÷ 60.

Example: 3,600 pouches/hour ÷ 60 = 60 pouches/min.

Method 2

From kg per hour + grams per pouch

Required ppm = (kg/hour × 1,000) ÷ grams/pouch ÷ 60.

Example: 300 kg/hour at 100 g/pouch = 3,000 pouches/hour = 50 ppm.

Method 3

From a daily pouch target

Required ppm = daily pouches ÷ productive running hours ÷ 60.

Example: 24,000 pouches over 8 productive hours = 50 ppm.

Use productive time, not only shift length

The same daily target needs more speed when actual running time is lower.

If a nominal 8-hour shift contains only 6 productive machine hours after planned stops, changeovers or cleaning, calculate against 6 hours rather than 8. The machine-specific allowance for interruptions should be discussed separately instead of assuming a universal percentage.

Daily target24,000 pouches
At 8 productive hours50 ppm
At 6 productive hours66.7 ppm

These are arithmetic examples only, not machine guarantees.

Current S.K. Packaging catalogue examples

Convert published hourly figures before comparing machine speed.

The table below uses current catalogue capacity fields only. Final operating output should still be confirmed at the actual product, fill weight and pouch requirement.

Do not stop at the arithmetic

Six checks before using ppm to shortlist a machine.

01

Confirm the exact product and its flow, density or fragility.

02

Calculate speed at the real target fill weight, not a different pack size.

03

Confirm pouch dimensions, style and laminate.

04

Match the filler system to the product before comparing headline speed.

05

Ask for expected output at the actual product and pouch requirement.

06

Confirm changeovers, utilities, optional equipment and commercial scope separately.

Direct answers

Common packing-speed calculation questions.

1

How do I convert pouches per hour to pouches per minute?

Divide pouches per hour by 60. For example, 3,600 pouches per hour equals 60 pouches per minute.

2

How do I calculate pouches per minute from kg per hour?

Convert kg per hour to grams per hour, divide by grams per pouch, then divide by 60. Formula: (kg/hour × 1,000) ÷ grams/pouch ÷ 60.

3

Should I select a machine only from the calculated pouches per minute?

No. Required speed is only one selection input. Product behaviour, fill weight, pouch dimensions, film, filler system, utilities and the demonstrated output for the actual product and pack should also be checked.

4

Is catalogue speed the same as guaranteed production speed?

No. Catalogue capacity is a reference. Actual output can change with product characteristics, fill weight, pouch size, material, machine configuration and operating conditions.
